ShopKnuckleheads: Matri-Phony- 1942
News today from ShopKnuckleheads- We have seen The Boys visit imaginary countries like Vulgaria and Moronica, but we have never seen them travel this far away OR this far back in time!
In this episode, the Stooges are set in Erysipilas, essentially ancient Rome!
Togas, tunics and military costumes are Roman. The names Mohicus, Larrycus, and Curly-que are Latin (or pig latin in Curly's case 🤣).
This is the first ancient Rome setting from Hollywood since DeMilles 'Cleopatra' (1934) and RKO's 'The Last Days of Pompeii' (1935), and would be the last until MGM's epic 'Quo Cadis?' in 1951!
The Stooges play heroes in this film as they help a damsel-in-distress from threatening royalty, and we get the iconic chase scenes here as well! We also get to see Curly dress in drag and flirt with the emperor (Octopus Grabus)! He also staves off a particularly viscous crab that gives him the longest CR-U-U-U-NCH in the history of Stoogedom!
The working title of this episode was 'Roamin' Romans'.
